Mark Milewski, EIT - Project Engineer
Mr. Milewski is a licensed Engineer In Training with 6 years of experience specific to environmental compliance, compliance, waste minimization and project and process engineering. Mr. Milewski has held responsible positions as a process engineer and as a quality engineer. Prior to working for Hastings Engineering, Inc., Mr. Milewski was employed by AmerenUE in Saint Louis, Missouri. Within AmerenUE, he served as the Supplier Quality Engineer for the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant. In that capacity, Mr. Milewski had responsibility for compliance and auditing for the Callaway facility and it’s suppliers. He was responsible for ensuring compliance to purchase order requirements and regulations, auditing internal and external suppliers to governmental standards in a highly regulated industry. Mr. Milewski’s industrial experience also includes five years with Nebraska Public Power District at the Cooper Nuclear Station located in Brownville, Nebraska. At Nebraska Public Power District, he held a position responsible for environmental compliance, environmental permitting, and project and process engineering related to environmental issues as well as design and troubleshooting. Mr. Milewski was responsible for NPDES, OSHA, RCRA, and radiochemistry monitoring and reporting. He also reviewed designs for all plant modifications, developed SPCC plans, wrote, revised and reviewed station procedures to ensure regulatory compliance. Mr. Milewski also was responsible for the power plant process water systems at the nuclear facility, which included electric boilers, closed loop cooling, single pass condensers, water polishing and anti-corrosive treatments, shock treatments for biological agents, sewage lagoons, and settling ponds. In these capacities, Mr. Milewski had regular involvement with regulating agencies such as NRC, EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, MDNR (Missouri State Environmental Agency), and NDEQ (Nebraska State Environmental Agency). Mr. Milewski was also a utility representative and guidance document reviewer in several nuclear industry groups which provided several key industry guideline documents. During Mr. Milewski’s undergraduate studies, Mr. Milewski worked with Dr. Sunggyu Lee at the University of Missouri – Columbia to develop a low cost, environmentally friendly method of treating municipal water and wastewater from industrial facilities. Expanding on Dr. Lee’s patent, Mr. Milewski designed a scalable system for the production and treatment of process water with chlorine dioxide. This methodology was deemed to yield no harmful by-products in contrast to traditional chlorine treatments which create THM’s (trihalomethanes) which are regulated hazardous pollutants and known carcinogens. Mr. Milewski was able to demonstrate a significant production yield for chlorine dioxide, a DOT restricted chemical, with a safe and affordable storage and delivery system. His ideas have been incorporated into the design of many of the newer water treatment systems and have increased the royalties from Dr. Lee’s patent for the University of Missouri – Columbia.
